As the spooky day got nearer and nearer, we had hoped for a gloomy and creepy atmosphere. But when the day had arrived, we were surprised with a warm and sunny Saturday on October 15th. While this wasn’t exactly in Halloween spirit, it was certainly a gorgeous day to be outside under the Fall sun carving pumpkins, listening to great music, and surrounded by prizes, a photo booth, kids activities, GUTS merch, our very own pumpkin MC, and donated raffles (even a puppy)!
The festivities took place atop the Penn Brewery garage, surrounded by old Pittsburgh stone walls capped with wrought iron fencing, and a picturesque look out onto the city. The scene was set – and the carvers ready. Individuals and teams were given 90 minutes to carve their best masterpiece into the pumpkin of their choosing. Amongst all the hustle and bustle of frantic carvers, there were all sorts of other fun activities going on! An energetic crowd of more than 100 people showed up to participate and witness GUTS (in all it’s glory).
There were 6 individuals and 11 teams that carved at the annual AIGA Pittsburgh GUTS benefit competition. As the 90 minutes dwindled down, the judging began; from People’s Choice, a Celebrity Judges Choice, and lastly our Make-A-Wish Ambassador Choice.
The proceeds, which AIGA PGH donated to the region’s Make-A-Wish Foundation chapter, helped enrich the life of one local child suffering from life-threatening medical conditions.
